The electives of the IIS are interdisciplinary, diverse, and (almost always) open to all UvA students. Most courses are taught in English. Some examples are:

Big History (6 ECTS, all UvA students)
How did the histories of the cosmos, life, Earth and human societies influence each other and shape important aspects of the world together? Big History will help you understand how everything around you became the way it is, so you can develop a better understanding of the challenges facing our societies now.
Sexology (6ECTS, all UvA students)
Sexology is the scientific study of sexuality, ranging from evolutionary, cognitive, and social psychology to history and sexual orientation. This course aims to provide you with an introduction to sexology research that is safe, up-to-date, and inspiring.
