Confidential advisers are there to support you if you're experiencing undesirable behaviour. Their role is to listen and advise, and they can refer you to a professional. UvA Economics and Business (UvA EB) has one more confidential adviser: Lindsy Wongsopawiro. Why did she become an adviser and what can students contact her for?

How did you end up in this role?

During my previous work experiences in secondary education and hospitals, I was already very interested in the role of confidential adviser. An opportunity arose at the UvA to fulfil this role and I was immediately enthusiastic. After having completed the training for confidential advisers, I am grateful that I can help people with matters that are close to my heart

Why did you want to become a confidential adviser?

Feeling safe in an environment is important for your (daily) functioning. Especially if you spend a lot of time in that environment. You only realize how much this is worth when something happens that doesn't feel okay. From my work experiences I have heard quite a few stories and experiences that were a form of undesirable behaviour. I have seen the effect on daily functioning. That is why I really want to be there for people who are going through this.

What kind of issues/problems can you help students with?

You can come to me when you have experienced undesirable behaviour such as discrimination, aggression, violence - physical and/or verbal -, bullying, intimidation and sexual intimidation. You are the one who decides when your boundaries have been crossed. Telling your story or just discussing it can already be a relief. And if you need more, we can explore that together. I think it is important that you feel seen and heard.

What can you give students who are unsure whether they can share their concerns with a confidential adviser?

The conversation with a confidential adviser is confidential. It is important not to keep walking around with an uncomfortable, hurt or unsafe feeling. Even if you have doubts, feel free to contact a confidential adviser of the UvA. You decide whether it remains at one conversation or whether you explore a possible next step together. You are in control. The confidential adviser is there for you with a listening ear.
