During my previous work experiences in secondary education and hospitals, I was already very interested in the role of confidential adviser. An opportunity arose at the UvA to fulfil this role and I was immediately enthusiastic. After having completed the training for confidential advisers, I am grateful that I can help people with matters that are close to my heart
Feeling safe in an environment is important for your (daily) functioning. Especially if you spend a lot of time in that environment. You only realize how much this is worth when something happens that doesn't feel okay. From my work experiences I have heard quite a few stories and experiences that were a form of undesirable behaviour. I have seen the effect on daily functioning. That is why I really want to be there for people who are going through this.
You can come to me when you have experienced undesirable behaviour such as discrimination, aggression, violence - physical and/or verbal -, bullying, intimidation and sexual intimidation. You are the one who decides when your boundaries have been crossed. Telling your story or just discussing it can already be a relief. And if you need more, we can explore that together. I think it is important that you feel seen and heard.
The conversation with a confidential adviser is confidential. It is important not to keep walking around with an uncomfortable, hurt or unsafe feeling. Even if you have doubts, feel free to contact a confidential adviser of the UvA. You decide whether it remains at one conversation or whether you explore a possible next step together. You are in control. The confidential adviser is there for you with a listening ear.
