Diversity Sounding Board makes six recommendations to the university

Published on 18-12-2024 15:00
The UvA's Diversity Sounding Board meets regularly to provide advice to the Executive Board (CvB). In response to all the unrest and discussions over the past year, this group has put six recommendations on paper for the UvA community. These recommendations aim to increase transparency, democracy and a sense of community within the UvA.

Recommendations

The recommendations are as follows:

  1. Moral clarity: We recommend a shared and open discussion about the core values of our institution, which can also be useful for future cases that may arise.
  2. Transparent leadership: We recommend being more transparent about how and why certain decisions have been made.
  3. Academic freedom: We advise the CvB to make decisions itself, without taking into account the political choices at that time.
  4. Freedom of expression and demonstration: We recommend working towards new forms of consultation, to arrive at an improved protocol/guideline that does not stifle democratic rights, while at the same time preventing structural disruption for those at the UvA who are not involved in a particular issue.
  5. Expertise on campus: We recommend investigating how we as an institution and community can facilitate the exchange of expertise, perspectives and open debates in such a way that it serves as an example for our broader and polarised society.
  6. Democratic deficit: We recommend developing a structural platform for such dialogue and consultation, for example in the form of a citizens' council, which should help prevent future repetitions of the tensions on our campus.

What is the Diversity Sounding Board?

The Diversity Sounding Board was established in April this year under the leadership of the Central Diversity Office. This group consists of over 30 students and staff, from all faculties and departments and from all levels of the organisation. Identity networks and bodies such as the Central Student Council and the Central Works Council are also represented.
