Reusable cups

Every year in the Netherlands, we throw away some 3 billion coffee cups. Producing these cups is highly resource-intensive, yet they only last an average of 10 minutes before ending up in the bin or as litter. This is about to change.

From Monday 3 April, we will replace the disposable cups now used in the P.C. Hoofthuis with reusable cups. Over the coming period, we will test whether this system would be suitable for all UvA sites.

New legislation

The Single Use Plastics legislation will come into force on 1 January 2024. From then on, providing disposables containing plastic (such as coffee cups) for on-site consumption will be prohibited. In anticipation of this new legislation, Facility Services is testing various methods to replace the disposable cups.

What will this mean for you?

Bin cups and disposable tableware

In the P.C. Hoofthuis, as of 3 April, your coffee or tea will be served in a new sustainable cup. This cup belongs to the UvA. Use it several times. At the end of your day, leave the cup in the 'cups and disposable tableware' bin. The cups in this bin will then be collected, sorted and washed. You will find your clean cup back at the coffee machines and restaurants.

The results of this test will take us closer to a sustainable and user-friendly solution.
