New Year, new and improved recycling!

Published on 13-12-2023
In early January, the waste bins at UvA will undergo a slight change. The bin for disposable cups and tableware will be replaced by two separate bins for Residual waste and Plastic. We are making this adjustment so we can recycle our waste even more effectively and also because disposable cups are no longer used on campus.

The waste bins at UvA will be divided as followed:

1. Organic (as before)
2. Residual waste & Cans
3. Plastic & Drink cartons
4. Paper (as before)

Disposable cups and disposable tableware are becoming less common on campus. If you still have a cup or disposable plate for the bin, it can go in the ‘Residual waste & Cans’.

Starting from January, metal cans will no longer go into the Plastic bin but into the ‘Residual waste & Cans’ bin. Our waste processor uses magnets to extract the metal from the waste.

Don’t waste your waste

If everyone throws their waste in the right bin, we can recycle 96% of the waste. However, if, for example, a plastic package ends up in the Organic Waste bin, the entire bin may be rejected, and the waste cannot be recycled. What a waste! Contribute to better recycling at UvA and dispose of your waste in the correct bin.

But what goes where?

To make it easier, we have taken photos of which waste goes in which bin, and these will be displayed near the waste bins in January. You will also be able to find a comprehensive list of which waste items go where in the A-Z list soon. Help improve waste recycling at UvA. Turn your waste into a valuable resource and toss it in the right bin.
