The vacancy for student assessor at Economics and Business is now open for applications. We spoke with current student assessor Jill Wang (21) about what she learned and achieved, and why you should apply for this role.
In my three years as student assessor I gained a behind-the-scenes understanding of how such a large organization as the university functions. In addition, I got many opportunities to make meaningful impact.
My experience as student assessor has shaped my work ethics, echoing the importance of effective collaboration. I have learned to manage my time efficiently, take initiative to introduce new ideas and engage with various stakeholders independently. Furthermore, this role taught me to present well-researched suggestions in a balanced manner, which has proven to be a valuable asset.
Last but not least, having both passion and patience in executing multiple long-term plans simultaneously, knowing that unforeseen changes are inevitable is still an ongoing process that i am committed to mastering further.
If I were to choose something that empowers me and reinforces my self-affirmation, it would be the personal growth I have experienced. This period encompassed a range of unique milestones, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the gradual transition back to campus. I have developed resilience, problem-solving skills, and the ability to thrive in dynamic and unpredictable circumstances.
Navigating through these challenging times was not easy, as the future seemed uncertain, and it was difficult to discern which direction things were heading. However, I have always tried my best to gain a comprehensive understanding by engaging in open conversations before making any judgments or decisions.
Looking back, I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities and the valuable lessons learned during these transformative years. They have shaped me into a more adaptable, assertive and empathetic professional, and I am eager to continue applying these skills.
Students should consider applying for this role because you can represent the voice of students. Personally, I experienced a highly supportive and inclusive environment within the organisation. Despite the complex organisational structure, I found that everyone, from the dedicated support team to the visionary education directors and our Dean, was not only approachable but also genuinely friendly and willing to help. This welcoming atmosphere fostered a sense of belonging and made me feel valued as a student assessor.
In my opinion it provides an ideal platform to collaborate and engage with individuals and teams across various levels of the institution. Through these interactions, you could also gain a comprehensive understanding of how such a large educational organisation works, and the challenges it faces. You are encouraged to bring your creative solutions to the table and help make a difference. Being part of this role allows you to develop essential skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. These skills are not only valuable within this context but will also serve well throughout any future academic and professional career. Most importantly, you will make connections with inspiring individuals who are dedicated to creating a positive educational experience for all.
Overall, I strongly believe that all students should feel encouraged to apply for this role and I am sure above all you will also have a lot of fun! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
