Previous research explores the negative effects of phone addiction on mental, physical and cognitive health. However, it is still unclear how phone addiction impacts long-term memory processes. Therefore, this study examined the following question: Does smartphone addiction impair learning and long-term memory performance in a verbal learning task in healthy adults? Participants performed the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test twice, on day 1 and a week later on day 7. Phone addiction was measured using the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version. Using a multiple linear regression, this study found no evidence that phone addiction is significantly associated with impaired verbal learning. Furthermore, mixed evidence was found for the relationship between phone addiction and long-term memory performance. Therefore, further research is needed to examine how phone addiction impacts memory in healthy adults.
