Self-regulation theory is the dominant framework for explaining when and why people succeed or fail in doing what they find important in their lives. Choice architecture (nudges) may provide assistance at moments when people have trouble regulating themselves. As such, self-regulation theory may offer a better account of why nudges are effective than the popular dual system fast and slow thinking approach. However, in view of recent debate on the I(ndividual) vs S(ystem) frame instigated by Chater & Loewenstein (2022), I argue that we need to broaden our perspective on self-regulation by designing nudges that emphasize the role of the community. I introduce the concept of community nudges that may help us understand when we are able and willing to self-regulate for the common good.
