Brief Intensive Trauma Treatment (BITT) is a short intensive treatment programme developed to treat adolescents with post-traumatic stress disorder. It is expected to result in lower dropout rates compared to regular weekly treatment. To examine whether adolescents referred to BITT show similarities with those who drop out, this study compares their network profiles to those of adolescents who either completed or dropped out of weekly treatment in an exploratory manner. Network models of the three groups were estimated. Differences in overall density, edge strength, expected influence, demographic factors, and symptom severity were assessed. The network of adolescents who dropped out was more complex compared to the network of adolescents referred to BITT. However, we also found similarities between the two groups. Adolescents who dropped out of weekly treatment or were referred to BITT reported more adverse childhood experiences, and their depression symptoms were less strongly connected to the other symptoms in the networks. BITT adolescents showed more severe symptoms overall, and anxiety symptoms and symptoms of arousal and reactivity influenced each other in both directions. The characteristics of BITT adolescents and dropouts can inform clinicians about who is at risk of dropout from weekly treatment and may benefit from BITT, helping to refer adolescents to a more suitable treatment and reducing dropout rates.
