Despite the psychological and social costs of engaging with distressing content, online communities dedicated to sharing footage of others dying attract substantial audiences. Prior research suggests that morbid curiosity, i.e. curiosity about death, violence, or harm, is driven by informational, emotional, and social motives. However, existing studies have focused on relatively mild negative content and structured experimental settings, limiting their applicability to engagement with intensely negative content in real-world settings. This study examines user-reported motives for watching such content by qualitatively analyzing a discussion thread with nearly 10,000 user comments from r/WatchPeopleDie (WPD), a now-banned Reddit board. Using reflexive thematic analysis, this study explores whether and how established motive taxonomies account for curiosity towards online death footage. Seven themes were developed which shed light on the perceived benefits of engaging with this content, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of morbid curiosity.
