Physical exercise interventions directed at Anxiety and depression, two of the most prominent mental health conditions globally, is an essential area in the development of cost effective means of treatment and prevention of mental health. An understudied area within this line of research is how metabolic targeted training may serve to reduce self-reported scores of anxiety and depression. Within this study, there were two objectives, the first and primary focus, investigate whether individuals that complete a higher proportion of anerobic exercise over an eight-week-exercise-intervention will see a greater reduction in self-reported psychological scores of anxiety (STAI-T) and depression (BDI). The second acted to serve as a supplementary investigation attempting to replicate previous findings showcasing PE beneficial effect on the same psychological scores used in the first objective. To address the first objective a serial mediation model was used to determine whether participants (n=21) with a higher anaerobic proportion will also exhibit the greatest reduction in psychological scores of depression (BDI) and anxiety (STAI-T). This hypothesis is based on previous research that has indicated that anaerobic exercise leads to quicker and greater improvements in known physiological mediators of mental health, CRF and HRV (Alansare et al., 2018b; Hannan et al., 2018; Milanović et al., 2015; Schulté et al., 2022), than aerobic exercise over intervention periods of comparable length. This model was able to yield one statistically significant relationship between larger anaerobic proportion of classes completed and reduced STAI-T scores. However, there was no noteworthy findings or relationship between anaerobic proportion and BDI scores. The replication study was unable within this sample population (n=45) and investigation to find meaningful relationships or findings. Furthermore, although this study largely lacks in statistical significance it advocates merit for further investigations between physical exercises’ relationship to mental health indices; with a significant finding with minimal participants, this study hopes to inspire subsequent investigations.
