At the beginning I was very nervous, migrating here as a student with a chronic illness. But you realize quickly you can build a community at UvA.
I suffer from fibromyalgia, which means my brain constantly signals my muscles and joints that they’re in pain. When the weather changes or when I’m stressed or anxious, it’s extra painful. It affects my studies, when I have a lot of assignments and I’m stressed, the pain turns into migraines, and it affects my brain. So, I’m not always able to remember certain things.
I reached out to the education desk for support, and they were very trusting, understanding, kind and willing to help me and make accommodations. I get a dictionary Spanish English and extra exam time for when my brain doesn’t cooperate or I’m in pain. That’s important, my life and my visa depend on my studies."
My advice to students would be: get informed. Take a look into the policies around disabilities and chronic illnesses. I did a vibe check first – how do I feel about the UvA? - and then investigated the practicalities.
Also reach out to your professors, they’re not intimidating at all. All the professors at the UvA have been great and very reachable. Be honest, be upfront and let them know how they can help you. Also: it gets better.”
