From my experience, having support from university is essential. But you have to tell your teachers and study advisors yourself what’s going on to get the support you need.
I have an autoimmune disease that swells the joints in my spine and the hips. Since I caught it in an early stage, I know how to deal with pain. Some days my arms, legs, hands, and ribs can hurt. But now I have medication, I’m doing very well.
You cannot see my disability, but in my experience: the university will make you feel seen. The support I receive from university is mostly understanding and flexibility, doctor’s appointments and picking up my medication takes a lot of time to commute.
The UvA has been telling me since the start that I should take care of myself first and university will still be there. My study advisors even told me: if you need anything from us, let us know.”
