I got accepted at UvA on the 1st of April and on the 2nd of April I saw my first MRI scans and got my results: I very likely have MS.
This was followed by a series of additional MRI scans, a lumbar puncture, and consultations with other specialists to rule out other conditions before confirming the diagnosis.
It’s a wave of attacks and I don’t feel the wave coming, so it can be quite sudden. My last relapse, I couldn’t move one side of my face and couldn’t focus on anything or tell the distance between myself and any object for about a month.
I wasn’t ready to accept I’m a student with a disability, but during the enrollment process I contacted the administration office, and I really appreciate them, I have felt really supported even before I was officially registered here. The study advisor has also given me a lot of emotional support. Because I can’t plan when my disease kicks in, my tutor has told me I can apply for extra time and have the option ready when I need it.
I’m still figuring things out myself, but I would tell new students: it can be hard, but let people know what’s going on, everyone is willing to help.
