Theatre of the Oppressed

Theatre of the Oppressed is a participatory theatre method developed in the 1960s by Brazilian director Augusto Boal. The method transforms passive spectators into active ‘spectator actors’ who explore, break through and change scenes of oppression. It is a powerful tool for social justice, community building and conflict resolution. Dr Alon further developed this method with Israelis and Palestinians, prisoners, asylum seekers and others.

About Chen Alon

Chen Alon co-founded the Israeli-Palestinian movement Combatants for Peace with Suleiman Khatib, for which they were twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Chen Alon is currently a Visiting Scholar at the UvA’s Amsterdam Center for Conflict Studies.
