Mnemonic techniques such as the method of loci and spaced repetition are often described as effective tools for improving memory, grounded in cognitive theories such as dual coding, levels of processing, and encoding specificity. This study investigates their impact on both verbal and visual memory across free recall and recognition tasks, providing a direct comparison of their respective strengths and limitations. It was hypothesized that structured mnemonic strategies would enhance memory performance compared to less controlled approaches. However, the findings suggest a more nuanced picture than previous research, highlighting the influence of strategy use and cognitive load on memory performance. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of when and why mnemonic strategies are effective in practice.
