Depression, which is well recognized for having a strong association with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is a heterogeneous condition and has different symptom dimensions that may relate differently to cardiovascular health. This study focusses on the association between depressive symptoms and CVD, distinguishing between somatic symptoms and cognitive/affective symptoms. Additionally, lifetime depressive symptoms were examined in a separate analysis. The study done here uses cross-sectional data from the UK Biobank where depressive symptoms were measured using the PHQ-9, and CVD was assessed through self-reported diagnoses. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted while adjusting for socioeconomic status, primary demographics, and lifestyle factors. Higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with greater odds of cardiovascular diseases. When somatic and cognitive/affective symptoms were separated, this showed differential associations with CVD. At last, lifetime depressive symptoms were independently associated with CVD. Knowing how specific depressive symptom profiles relate to CVD may contribute to better targeted clinical interventions.
