This study sought to identify the most effective approach to visualising Likert scale data by (1) reviewing 230 academic articles to assess how such data are currently presented in practice and (2) conducting an online survey among 82 participants, who were first introduced to eight visualisation methods and then completed a series of paired comparisons, rating their preference on a continuous scale. Across both lines of evidence, grouped bar charts emerged as the strongest option, appearing in one out of every four reviewed articles containing Likert scale visualisations and exceeding the average preference level by approximately 20 points on the 100-point scale. The paper concludes by demonstrating how to construct such a visualisation in JASP and proposing a possible improvement.
