Revisiting the past, envisioning the future

During the Maagdenhuis occupation in 2015, the University of Colour was founded with one central message: ‘No democratisation without decolonisation’. After the occupation, the Executive Board agreed to establish an independent diversity committee. Prof. Gloria Wekker was appointed chair and in 2016 the committee presented the report 'Let's Do Diversity'. This marked the start of the UvA's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Ten years on, we will reflect on what has changed at the UvA in the field of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) since that influential publication. But we will also address which themes remain relevant today and what we can do moving forward.

Programme

  • Contribution by new President of the Executive Board, Prof. Vinod Subramaniam
  • Launch of the UvA's new Inclusive Language Guide
  • Workshop round 1
    • Guided tour of the University Quarter focusing on the colonial history of the buildings
    • Inclusive language in practice
  • Workshop session 2
    • Working and studying with a disability
    • The role of men in a changing society
  • Panel discussion featuring, among others, Machiel Keestra (Central Diversity Officer at the UvA), Vinod Subramaniam and Prof. Rolando Vázquez (Professor of Post/Decolonial Theories and co-author of the ‘Let's Do Diversity’ report)
  • A closing reception with light refreshments
