While she studied History at the UvA, Anna Eva Boogaard worked at Kriterion. There, she learned about the forgotten resistance history of the female students who were at the cradle of this student cinema in Amsterdam. She wrote her Master’s thesis on these Kriterion Girls, but even after finishing her studies she wasn’t done writing. During Brain Bites, we will talk with her about the research that resulted in the Dutch book De Kriterionmeisjes (2025).
While much has been written about the role of men in the resistance, Boogaard discovered that the role these women played had fallen into oblivion. In her research, she not only brings these forgotten personal histories back to light, but also explores the question of why we are unfamiliar with so many women’s histories.
