'Louise' is a play by the Reframing HERstory Foundation and is based on an embroidery by Louise van Ommeren-Hengevelt from Arnhem. The domain of women from the affluent bourgeoisie was indoors, where embroidery, knitting, and sewing showcased their virtue. At the same time, this work is a protest against slavery. Did she advocate for enslaved people in the East and West? Or was this a plea for women like herself?
The performance highlights the overlooked history of marginalised women’s lives. After 150 years of emancipation, it is time to move beyond relying solely on colonial prosperity and to reveal the human suffering behind the wealth of the 18th century. This awareness can guide us toward a new, more inclusive way of living together.
The programme begins with a historical introduction. Immediately after the performance, there will be a reflective session led by Farida Nabibaks, focusing on what moves us (historically and personally). Afterwards, a Surinamese drink will be served for all attendees.
