It can be tempting to use a chatbot in your search for information. You might wonder: why bother with a database if AI gives you faster and easier answers? In this interactive workshop, you'll explore the differences between search engines, databases, and generative AI tools like ChatGPT. You'll work hands-on with both the UvA AI chatbot (privacy-friendly) and several databases relevant to your field. You’ll learn when to use each source and how to critically assess AI-generated output. We’ll also introduce a practical checklist to help you evaluate the quality of AI content.

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Identify the differences between search engines, databases, and generative AI in the information search process
• Effectively use reliable, primary sources (such as academic databases) and the UvA AI chatbot for research
• Critically assess whether a GenAI tool is suitable for your information needs
• Evaluate AI-generated content using a practical checklist
