Most people are honest most of the time, only about 5% of people lie a lot and account for the majority of lies told. While this lying distribution is well-replicated, it’s unclear what characterizes the ‘prolific liar'. Research has focused on personality to predict lying on a continuum. Specifically, the Dark Factor of Personality, which aims to capture the core of antagonistic traits, has consistently been associated with deception. Yet, it is unclear whether the Dark Factor of Personality can successfully distinguish between prolific liars and everyday liars. Through a multi-lab online survey this study investigates whether the Dark Factor can distinguish between prolific liars and everyday liars, while also exploring how prolific liars situate themselves in a broader psychological network of dishonesty, including lying distress, social consequences, and motivations.
