The following statement was issued by the Executive Board in response to the brief squat of the UvA’s Student Services building at the Binnengasthuisstraat.

Bart Bakker

This morning, the UvA’s Student Services building was briefly squatted. The president of the Executive Board asked the squatters several times by phone to willingly vacate the building. After resolute refusal by the squatters, the police were asked to empty the building.

In a statement released earlier, the squatters demanded that 1 May be reinstated as a public holiday at the UvA. Last year this day was added, in consultation with the representative advisory bodies and the unions, to the total number of days off. This was done to enable staff to determine for themselves when they wish to use this day.

Together with the Central Works Council and Central Student Council, the Executive Board would like to hold an open debate about a more democratic university.

The Student Services building will remain closed for the rest of the day. Student Services can still be contacted by phone or email. Prospective students with urgent questions should visit the Student Service Desk at the Roeterseiland Campus, REC-C1.01 (entrance at building B/C), Nieuwe Achtergracht 166. The Student Service Desk will be open until 17:30.
