Programme overview - RMSS

The programme offers four methodological specialisations: Empirical-Analytical, Interpretative and Mixed Methods mandatory fieldwork, and Mixed Methods with a mandatory internship.

Who is Who

The human infrastructure supporting the programme includes the programme director, the study advisor/programme coordinator, the specialisation tutors, the examinations board, the programme committee and the Registrar’s Office. The Programme Director of the research Master's programme in Social Sciences is Franca van Hooren. Franca van Hooren is assistant professor in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam Amsterdam and affiliated with the research programme group Political Economy and Transnational Governance. Students can contact their Programme Director through their study adviser/programme coordinator, Alyt Klomp an Lise van Ingen. They are responsible for the everyday functioning of the programme and student counselling, monitoring student’s progress in the programme and giving advice on (alternative) study plans. They also have a role in the course registration and mediating between students and lecturers, if necessary.

All first year students will be appointed to a tutor, that functions as the bridge between students and the research programmes affiliated to the disciplines Anthropology, Sociology and Political Science. There are three tutors in the programme, and they have the following responsibilities:

  • introducing students to relevant program groups and UvA researchers
  • helping students to develop their research ideas and find a research topic
  • suggesting staff members for an individual reading course
  • helping students to find an internship(supervisor) and thesis, and supervisor(s)

The RMSS specialisation tutors are:

For Sociology: Dr. Bram Lancee

For Political Science: Dr. Eelco Harteveld

Bram Lancee is also the coordinator for external internships.
