Graduation

Social Sciences

Follow the steps below to request a degree certificate (diploma) for your programme.

Also be sure to read the general rules that apply to the request of degree certificates.
General UvA rules for requesting a diploma certificate

Bachelor's programmes

  • Political Science (Bsc)

The programme administration will apply for your diploma if you're registered for your Bachelor's Thesis in SIS. But make sure that you've followed all the steps described below.

Step 1: Fill out the graduation form

Students who are enrolled for the Bachelor’s thesis will receive an email from the programme administration. In this email they will be informed about the diploma application, the graduation ceremony and they will be asked to fill our and submit the graduation form. The diploma application will be finalised once all your grades, including the grade for the thesis, are registered in SIS.

    Graduation form

Step 2: Don't want to graduate yet?

If you do not want to graduate even though you qualify for graduation and have completed all courses and your thesis, you will have to inform the programme administration within 6 weeks after the application. Otherwise the registrar will assume you want to graduate and will finalise the diploma application as soon as you have fulfilled the programme requirements.

Step 3: When will you receive your degree certificate?

Processing your diploma application takes approximately six weeks. You will receive your diploma during the first possible graduation ceremony, or you may pick it up after that date. Please contact the programme administration of your programme if you have any questions about this.

Step 4: What else do I need to do and know?

    • See the 'Terminating enrolment' page for more information on the necessary steps (such as returning your student ID card).
    • If your study results have not yet been fully processed in SIS by the end of the academic year or you do not know whether your examination date will take place within the current academic year (31 August at the latest), make sure to re-enrol in the Political Science Bachelor's programme via Studielink before 1 September. If you fail to do so, no new marks can be entered and your degree certificate will not be created. Enrolment is only possible as of 1 September or 1 February (your enrolment must have been entirely completed before these dates). You may not enrol in the interim. If you do not enrol on time, you run the risk of graduating with a six-month delay.
    • Once you have met the obligations for your degree programme and your final results have been processed in SIS, the secretariat will further process your degree certificate application. You will then receive an e-mail from the SIS system to inform you that you can terminate your enrolment. You can terminate your enrolment in the Political Science Bachelor's programme via Studielink in order to stop your tuition fee payments. However, you do not have to terminate your enrolment between 1 June and 31 August; your enrolment will automatically be terminated effective 31 August and no tuition fees will be reimbursed over this period.
    • If you have completed a minor programme at another institution, you will have to submit an official copy (signed and stamped) of the certificate and/or a list of marks to the Programme Secretariat. You can request a copy from the secretariat of the degree programme offering the minor programme. Make sure to do so in good time, as it can take a while to prepare a certificate. These documents must be submitted to the Education Desk Social Sciences, REC B7.00, attention of the Political Science Examinations Board. The documents may also be submitted in digital format via politicologie@uva.nl.
    • If you have completed a minor programme at another institution, make sure to request the minor certificate from the relevant secretariat. In the case of minors within Social Sciences, you can apply for a certificate via minor-csw@uva.nl.
    • If you will be following up your Bachelor's programme with one of the Master's programmes offered by the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS), make sure to enrol for the Master's programme yourself via Studielink and to register with the GSSS. For the entire enrolment procedure, enrolment deadlines and admission requirements, see the GSSS website.
    • In some cases, you will need proof that you have met all requirements for the Bachelor's programme in order to enrol in a Master's programme at another university (due to the fact that the actual degree certificate will not be available until October). In such case, you can request a Bachelor's statement from the Programme Secretariat, on the precondition that you have filled out the graduation form.
    • Please contact the Programme Secretariat (politicologie@uva.nl) if you have any further questions.

Step 5: What is my graduation date?

Your graduation date is the last day of the month in which you completed your last course. This is the date upon which you took your final exam or submitted your paper/thesis, not the date upon which your marks were registered.

    Step 6: Degree ceremony

Bachelor's degree certificates are presented once a year over the course of a festive ceremony. The upcoming graduation ceremony date will be announced.

    Graduation ceremony

You can indicate whether you wish to take part in the ceremony on your graduation form. Please keep in mind that the degree programme will want to know whether you will be attending one month in advance. You will receive further information about the ceremony two weeks before the event. If you have any questions, please contact the Programme Secretariat via politicologie@uva.nl.

  • Sociology (BSc)

    • Send in the graded version of your thesis in a pdf document to the programme administration via sociologie@uva.nl
The thesis should be delivered in one PDF-file. On the first page of the document please mention the following:
      • title of the thesis
      • your name & student number
      • names of the supervisor and second reader
      • your private email address
      • the date
    • If you do not wish your thesis to be published in the online thesis database of the University Library, please mention this in the accompanying email.
    • If, at the end of the academic year, you have not yet finished your thesis or if it is unsure whether your examination date will be in the current academic year (31 August at the latest), please register yourself again in Studielink for your studies before 1 September! If you don’t, your grade cannot be booked and your diploma cannot be processed. If you are not certain if you will finish in time, please reregister just to be sure. Needless to say; you will have to pay extra tuition fees if you have to register for another (part of the) academic year - unless you finished before 31 August after all (in which case you will be refunded).
    • Once you received a grade for your thesis and an email from SIS concerning deregistration, you can deregister in Studielink. You automatically stop paying tuition fees then (and possibly get a refund). Between 1 June and 31 August, you do not have to actively deregister, since your enrollment ends automatically at the end of the academic year (31 August) and there is no tuition fee refund for this period.

    Termination of Enrolment

Step 5: What is my graduation date?

Your graduation date is the last day of the month in which you completed your last course. This is the date upon which you took your final exam or submitted your paper/thesis, not the date upon which your marks were registered.

    Time Frame

You can expect the following time frame for this procedure:

Only if your final grade is submitted at least one week before the last workday of that month, the administration can guarantee an examination date in that same month.

Please note that if you have followed a non-standard programme part, such as an individual thesis, deadline extension, extracurricular courses, an internship etcetera, your diploma application can only be processed after approval of the Examinations Board. Make sure you submit your request for a non-standard programme part in time in order not to delay your graduation.

The graduation ceremony takes place between one and three months after the examination date.

If, at the end of the academic year, you have not yet finished your thesis or if it is unsure whether your examination date will be in the current academic year (31 August at the latest), don't forget to re-enroll again through Studielink for your studies before 1 September! If you don’t, your grades cannot be booked and your diploma request cannot be processed. If you are not certain that you will finish in time, please re-enroll for your studies as well. Needless to say, you will have to pay extra tuition fees if you have to re-enroll for another (part of the) academic year.

Master's programmes

  • Conflict Resolution and Governance and Political Science (MSc)

    Graduation step by step:

The registrar will apply for your diploma in SiS as soon as you have completed 30 credits of your master programme, after which you have 6 weeks to make an official objection or appeal, should you wish to postpone your graduation.

    • First of all: hand in your thesis both digitally (in pdf format) and in hard copy to your supervisor and second reader.
    • Your supervisor and second reader will grade your thesis and hand in the grade to the registrar’s office. The grade will then be registered in SiS. Your supervisor will give you feedback on your thesis.
    • For the purpose of archiving and online publication, also hand in the final draft of your thesis to the registrar’s office (digitally-in pdf format).
    • Without notice from you that you wish to postpone graduation and on completion of the programme i.e all grades (total 60 credits) have been registered in SiS, the registrar will finalise the diploma application and notify you. The registrar will also let you know when you can terminate your enrolment at the UvA. Between 1 June and 31 August, however, your enrolment will be terminated automatically at the end of the academic year i.e. 31 August.
    • The registrar's office will inform you about the graduation dates. Graduation ceremonies take place once a year, around autumn. You do not need to be enrolled at the UvA for the ceremony. If you prefer, however, you can collect your diploma at the registrar’s office. Alternative dates or additional graduation ceremonies are not possible.

What else do I need to do and/or know?

    • Please read and follow the instructions on this website (see A-Z) to see what else you have to do (for example handing in your student ID-card). If you cannot find the information you need, please contact the Student Service Desk.
    • If, at the end of the academic year, you have not yet finished your thesis or if it is unsure whether your examination date will be in the current academic year (31 August at the latest), please re-enrol in Studielink for your study programme before 1 September! If you don’t, your grade cannot be registered and your diploma application cannot be processed. If you are not certain that you will finish in time, please re-enrol just to be sure. Needless to say; you will have to pay extra tuition fees for the additional months that you are enrolled.
    • Once you have received a grade for your thesis, and an e-mail from the Registrar’s Office concerning the termination of enrolment, you can terminate your enrolment in Studielink. You then automatically stop paying tuition fees (and possibly qualify for a refund). You do not need to terminate your enrolment between 1 June and 31 August, as this ends automatically at the end of the academic year (31 August) and there is no tuition fee refund in this period.
