Course registration

You are required to register for (elective) courses during the official registration period. When you are registered for a course, you are automatically registered for the exams, resits and the Canvas page for that course. Please check your syllabus/course manual for information on resits (if applicable).

Registration

First-year Bachelor's students do not have to register for the courses offered in the first semester of the first year. Registration is compulsory for all courses provided in the second semester and later via uva.nl/courseregistration

All new students in the Master’s Programmes Cultural and Social Anthropology , Human Geography, International Development Studies, Medical Anthropology and Sociology, Urban and Regional Planning and the Research Master’s programme IDS, are registered for all their courses by the study adviser. Step-by-step guide to course registration

Step 1: Enrol in your degree programme in Studielink

Request enrolment in an UvA degree programme in Studielink. This requires a DigiD.* It may take up to 48 hours before you can register for courses.

* If you apply for a DigiD or make any changes to it, you will receive an activation code within 5 days.

More information on enrolment and reenrolment

Please note that you have already taken this step since applying for the bachelor's programme requires registration in Studielink.

Step 2: Select your courses

Go to the Course Catalogue, find your degree programme and select the courses you want to follow.

Step 3: Enter your chosen courses in the Planner

Go to uva.nl/courseregistration, find your courses and click on ‘Add Course’.

Step 4: Check your timetable

Go to the Planner tab and view your course timetable under ‘Open timetable’. If you have registered for tutorials, make sure that there is no overlap in your timetable.

Step 5: Complete the course registration

Go to the Planner tab, check the boxes for the tutorials (WG) [or other course components] you wish to follow and click on 'Register' and then on ‘OK’.

Step 6: Check your registration

Go to the 'Overview of registrations’ tab and check your registrations.

Deregistration

You can cancel course registrations at uva.nl/courseregistration. Go to the 'Overview of registrations' tab, check the box next to the course you wish to cancel and click on 'Deregister' and then on 'OK'. You can only cancel courses up until 15 working days after the start of the course.

Please note: it is important to deregister for courses you do not plan to follow. If you do not attend a course for which you registered, the result recorded for this course will be ‘NAP’ (the Dutch abbreviation for ‘non-attendance, counted as exam attempt’). Moreover, you will be preventing a fellow student from occupying your place in the course.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for the courses are described in the Course Catalogue. The Programme Administration will verify that you have met the entry requirements as soon as the results of the previous semester's exams have been registered. If your study results do not meet the entry requirements then you will lose your right to follow the course and your registration will be cancelled.

In some cases, you may not meet the entry requirements at the time of registration, although you may do so later in the academic year. In this case your registration will be conditional.

Maximum number of ECTS credits

Students register for 30 EC per semester. Students who wish to take a programme exceeding 30 credits per semester must first seek advice from their study adviser.

Waiting list

You are only guaranteed a place in an (elective) course if you are registered for it during the registration period. If you fail to do so, you can put your name on the waiting list, but your placement will not be guaranteed. If you are too late with your registration or if you want to put your name on the waiting list, please contact your study adviser.

Switching tutorial groups

If there are no places in the tutorial group of your choice, you are not happy with the group to which you have been allocated, or you have changed your mind, then you may be able to switch places with one of your fellow students. You must both go to the Education Desk to change your registrations.

You can make this switch until 17:00 on the Thursday before the start of the next period.
