On Friday, 20 March all students of the Faculty of Science received important information about the completion of courses in block 4. Read here the content.

Dear student,

On top of the current developments around the Coronavirus, and the insecurities that follow from these developments, many of are obviously also preoccupied with the upcoming exam week starting this Monday. This past week, the education staff at the Faculty of Science has been hard at work to find alternatives for the completion of block 4. Your course coordinator(s) will inform you via Canvas about what you are expected to do to complete the course. In this email, we will give you some more general information about the completion of block 4.

Exam or no exam?

Every course coordinator, in consultation with the programme director, has made a decision on whether the course can be completed at this time and – if so – how. Criteria for making this decision were, among others, to ensure that the quality of the exam doesn’t suffer and that the proposed alternative examination is workable for you as a student; both in terms of preparation as well as in taking the exam itself. The proposed alternative examinations have been submitted to the Examinations Board for approval. There are three possibilities:

1.           The course can be completed as planned

2.           The course can be completed with some adjustments to the examination method

3.           The course cannot be completed at this time and the exam needs to be rescheduled.

Exams that cannot be conducted at this time will be rescheduled. Alternative assessment dates will be determined per programme, taking into account that there will be enough time between an exam and the resit of that exam. Alternative exam dates will also be announced via Canvas in due course.

Extra first exam/resit opportunity

Students that cannot take the exam at this time or fail to do well under the current circumstances, will get an extra opportunity to take the exam for the first time or to resit the exam. More information about this will follow in due course.

Information guide for Faculty of Science students

On the webpage uva.nl/coronavirus you’ll find information about the Coronavirus and the consequences for UvA students and staff. Today, 20 March the daily update included information about the binding study advice (BSA).

In addition, the Education Desk at the Faculty of Science is doing their utmost to answer all questions we receive via email. Unfortunately, there are several issues to which we don’t have the answer at this time. For example because the concrete effects of today’s decisions are still being worked out on the programme- or course level. Our main concern is to ensure your study progress, but this might require some flexibility. We hope we can count on your understanding in these matters.

To guide you through the information that is available, we added a page to your programme’s website. Here, we will also post any additional information that applies specifically to Faculty of Science students.

(The link in this email refers to the programme website for the Artificial Intelligence Master’s. However, the information is the same for all Faculty of Science programmes. Visit student.uva.nl, choose your programme from the list and click on ‘Corona’ in the top navigation.)

Kind regards,

Education Desk – Faculty of Science
