Representation for students

Central Student Council

The Central Student Council (CSR) is the highest representative body for UvA students. The CSR meets with the Executive Board and represents all students of the University of Amsterdam.

The fourteen members of the CSR are elected annually. Seven are elected directly and seven are designated by the faculty student councils. This promotes closer contact between the various student councils and facilitates a more efficient and effective response to problems that may arise within the faculties.

As a participatory body, the CSR has two types of rights:

  • Right of consultation: This means that the CSR must be consulted on certain decisions. The CSR responds by issuing an opinion. While this opinion is not binding, it must be factored into the decision-making process.
  • Right of approval: This means that the CSR’s approval is required for policy to become legal and is therefore binding.

The CSR’s discussion partner is the Rector Magnificus, who represents the Executive Board. Another important discussion partner is the Works Council, which consists of elected UvA staff and lecturers. The CSR and the Works Council together form the Joint Assembly. The Joint Assembly has the right of approval in a number of areas.
