Course and exam registration

Social Sciences (Research Master's)

Each semester, you are required to register for courses during the official registration period. When you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the exams, resits and the Canvas page for that course.

Course registration periods

Make sure to register during the official registration period, because only then will you be guaranteed a place in your compulsory courses. The registration periods for the Master's courses offered during the 2019-2020 academic year are:

Step-by-step guide to course registration

Make sure your Studielink enrolment in your UvA degree programme is still active. This requires a DigiD.* In case you need to re-enrol, it may take up to 48 hours before you can register for courses.

* If you apply for a DigiD or make any changes to it, you will receive an activation code within 5 days.

More information on enrolment and reenrolment

Step 2: Select your courses

Go to the Course Catalogue, find your degree programme and select the courses you want to follow.

Step 3: Enter your chosen courses in the Planner

Go to, find your courses and click on ‘Add Course’.

Step 4: Check your timetable

Go to the Planner tab and view your course timetable under ‘Open timetable’ (or navigate to Make sure that there is no overlap in your timetable.

Step 5: Complete the course registration

Go to the Planner tab, check the boxes for the tutorials (WG) [or other course components] you wish to follow and click on 'Register' and then on ‘OK’. You can only register for a course during the registration period; the check box to register will only be visible during this time-frame.

Step 6: Check your registration

Go to the 'Overview of registrations’ tab and check your registrations. You will receive a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours of completing the registration procedure.

Maximum number of ECTS

We recommend following no more than 30 ECTS worth of courses per semester. This is equivalent to a study load of 40 hours per week. If you wish to follow more than 30 ECTS of courses during a semester, you must discuss this with your study adviser before the course registration period opens.

You can cancel course registrations at Go to the 'Overview of registrations' tab, check the box next to the course you wish to cancel and click on 'Deregister' and then on 'OK'. You can only cancel courses up until 15 working days after the start of the course.

Please note: it is important to deregister for courses you do not plan to follow. If you do not attend a course for which you registered, the result recorded for this course will be ‘NAP’ (the Dutch abbreviation for ‘non-attendance, counted as exam attempt’). Moreover, you will be preventing a fellow student from occupying your place in the course.

Waiting list

If a course is full you can be registered for a waiting list (WL).

  • Your registrations for compulsory courses will always be accepted.
  • If you register for an elective that is already full then you can only be accepted if a place becomes vacant.

If a place becomes vacant and you meet the entry requirements, you will be registered for that course no later than one week prior to the start of the block.

You are only guaranteed a place in a compulsory course if you registered for it during the registration period. If you fail to do so, we advise you to make an appointment with the study adviser of the Research Master's Social Sciences, who might be able to register you. Your placement, however, will not be guaranteed.
