As of the start of the new academic year Urkund will be the new tool for plagiarism detection in Canvas.
The program compares a given text with other existing texts from different sources. If there is any cross-over with existing texts, the extent of the similarity is expressed as a percentage.
The intellectual property rights of student assignments are protected. In no case, Urkund will have ownership of documents submitted to Urkund. The documents are stored only for the purpose of conducting plagiarism checks and to allow UvA to examine possible cases of plagiarism.
Urkund must comply by contract with European laws regarding data protection and privacy (GDPR). All files and corresponding data are stored on servers located within the European Union. Urkund is a Swedish company.
