What is the value of diversity in an academic environment?

Michael S. Merry & Terrence Jorgensen

Everywhere one looks today the mantra of ‘more diversity’ can be heard. These conversations ordinarily have a certain demographic flavor. This is often tied to concepts of social justice (e.g., equity for members of marginalized communities, where equity implies a place at the table), but the potential for such diversity to positively influence the long-term status quo is less often made explicit.  As such, increasing diversity is often perceived (or at least communicated) by members of the status quo in terms of responsibility to others rather than to oneself. In this talk we restrict our attention to two features of diversity that (should) have relevance to an academic environment, and to the Research Master program in particular: epistemological and methodological diversity. We will argue that we generally fail on both counts, and ask what, if anything, can be done to change the existing situation.
