  • Free-choice electives in the Master’s

    Most Master’s programmes offer limited opportunity to take electives. See the Course Catalogue for the electives available in your programme.

    What can be selected as a free-choice elective?

    • courses from the curricula of other law programmes;
    • non-law courses from the curricula of non-law university programmes;
    • a practical or an internship.

    These courses must be related to your Master’s programme.

    Credit for (elective) courses earned prior to your Master’s

    Courses taken prior to your Master’s cannot be listed on your diploma as free-choice electives, nor can they result in exemptions from free-choice electives.

    Requesting approval for electives

    Your academic plan in SIS provides a list of electives that do not need prior approval. Electives not listed in your academic plan need the prior approval of the Examinations Board. For you own sake, please always request prior approval before taking any course that requires it.

  • Extra-curricular (elective) courses and the diploma supplement

    If you plan to take an extra course (i.e. in addition to the regular 60 ECTS credit curriculum of, respectively, the Master’s programme) and would like to have it listed as an extracurricular course on the supplement to your diploma, you will need to file a request with the Examinations Board.

    What are the requirements for listing extra-curricular courses on the diploma supplement?

    The rules that apply to requesting approval for the inclusion of (free-choice) electives in your degree programme apply equally to extra-curricular electives.

    Furthermore, the extra-curriculair course must be sufficiently related to the subject of the Master's programme.

How do you request approval?

Your academic plan in SIS provides a list of electives that do not need prior approval. Electives not listed in your academic plan need the prior approval of the Examinations Board. For you own sake, please always request prior approval before taking any course that requires it.
