In the past weeks we have informed you about the measures during remote examinations, such as control measures. In a number of courses, students have already gained experience with this. Some students, as well as the FSR, have asked questions about why the control measures in online examinations are necessary.

Because we try to keep the explanations of online examinations short and concise, we will hereby explain you more about the control measures in online examinations.

We are very aware of the fact that, in the current situation, remote teaching and remote testing are very burdensome for you.  Many students are understandably very concerned about the corona crisis and its effects on health, on education, and some also about their career prospects. We want to show understanding for this and offer personal help and coulance where necessary and possible.

At the same time, we also have a responsibility to ensure the quality of the programmes we provide and the diplomas we award. The decision that we (like all other law faculties in the Netherlands) have taken to allow education and testing to continue as much as possible in order to prevent study delays, also means that we must ensure that we continue to meet the quality requirements set for our study programmes.

Ensuring the quality of examinations

As a faculty we are obliged to guarantee the quality of education. The Examinations Board has the important (legal) role to guarantee the reliability and validity of examinations, so that we can ensure that students have the desired level at the end of a course or program.  It is for this reason that the Examinations Board draws up rules about the reliability of tests, fraud and plagiarism.

In this unusual time where exams are taken remotely and are often 'open book exams', the normal rules to guarantee the quality of exams (e.g. surveillance) are not very useful, and therefore our Examinations Board has drawn up additional rules to guarantee the reliability of tests. These additional rules include

  • Plagiarism control of submitted work via Canvas;
  • the determination of tight time blocks in which (parts of) exams must be made;
  • randomly calling students to check whether they have made the submitted work themselves.

We recognise that these measures can be experienced as drastic or unpleasant. But we hope you understand that these measures are necessary to guarantee the quality of your diploma.
