As early as in 2003, the UvA was active in this field with a project aimed at introducing measures pursuant to the Dutch Personal Data Protection Act (Wet bescherming persoonsgegevens). Similarly, the UvA is actively preparing for its successor, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The GDPR is another step forward in the protection of personal data, giving citizens across the European Union more control of and rights with regard to their data. The GDPR took effect on 25 May 2018.
