Education in the first semester 2020-2021

Faculty of Humanities

In September you will start with a Bachelor's, pre-Master's or Master's programme at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam. Due to the corona crisis, the start of your education will be different than you expected and perhaps hoped for, and we can imagine that you have many questions about what our education will look like from September onwards.

First and foremost, we would like to emphasise that we will make sure that everyone who has been accepted to a Bachelor's, pre-Master's or Master's programme at the Faculty of Humanities and who has completed the enrolment process in time will be able to start their studies in September and follow a full-fledged programme at our university. Over the past few months, the UvA has gained a lot of experience in providing education and taking exams online. We have seen that online education offers many possibilities, but direct contact – between students and lecturers and among students – is and will remain an essential aspect of studying. This is why we would like to reinstate on-site education as soon as we can do so in a safe and responsible manner.

First semester can be followed online in full

At the moment, it is certain that at any rate, you will be able to follow all education of the first semester online. In addition to this, we hope that we will be able to offer you small-scale education in our buildings. We also aim to organise some activities on location for first-year students, so that you can get to know your fellow students.

Please be assured that we will continuously take into account students who are not yet able to come to Amsterdam due to travel restrictions or for health reasons. All study programmes of the Faculty of Humanities will continue to offer online teaching, even if on-campus teaching is gradually being reinstated. This means that for the our programmes it is not necessary to be in Amsterdam to be able to complete the first semester. We will also indicate in good time how the second semester will be given shape, so that you can prepare yourself well for this.

Please note that if you need a visa for your studies and you are not yet able to travel to Amsterdam, it is still necessary to arrange your visa on time. After your visa has been issued, you will have a considerable number of months to enter the Netherlands. Check uva.nl/visa for more info.

Timetables

As a UvA student, you can view your personal schedule on the timetables website (rooster.uva.nl) and on the MyUvA mobile app. Please note that the timetables are subject to change due to the corona measures. This also depends on whether courses can (also) be taught on location.

Introduction activities

Many introductory activities at the Faculty of Humanities take place in the first week of the first semester (the week from 31 August to 4 September) instead of the week before. These activities can be found in the regular timetables, and not under Introduction weeks.
