In a time when misinformation prevalence is higher than ever and the idea of ‘truth’ is incredibly subjective, understanding factors which contribute to misinformation susceptibility is of particular importance. The study at hand represents the first of its kind to examine the role of demographic characteristics on truth bias - the tendency to assume that information given is true regardless of knowledge of its falsity. More specifically, it investigates the relationship between age and susceptibility to truth bias. This is of particular interest due to conflicting findings on the age-related differential susceptibility to misinformation. Moreover, the research pays particular attention to the effect of education on misinformation vulnerability, which has been well substantiated, as well as a novel look into how education may moderate the relationship between age and truth bias. Using a correlational design, participants from different age groups and educational backgrounds were assessed for their susceptibility to truth bias. Contrary to expectations, neither age nor education significantly predicted truth bias. Additionally, the anticipated moderating relationship of education on age-related differential susceptibility was not supported. While the findings did not reveal significant effects, they offer valuable insight into the novel field of truth bias in misinformation as well as the complexities of misinformation susceptibility while underscoring the need for further research in this area.
