Frequently Asked Questions Graduation and Requesting a Degree Certificate

Do you have additional questions not answered in the FAQ below? Please contact the Education Desk.

Before requesting your degree certificate

  • When should I file a request for my degree certificate?

You should submit a application for your degree certificate in the month in which you will complete all requirements of your study programme. This means that you can apply for your degree certificate in the month in which you expect to take your final exam or the month of the deadline for handing in the final version of your thesis as is stated in the UvA Course Catalogue.

  • When can I terminate my enrolment in Studielink?
  • When will I receive my certificate?

For every programme there will be a graduation ceremony. If you are unable to attend, you can collect your certificate from the Education Desk.

For pick-up dates and forthcoming Bachelor’s and Master’s ceremony dates, please go to graduation dates and ceremonies.

Be aware that dates might have been changed due to the current circumstances caused by the spreading of the coronavirus. We would like to advise you to keep an eye on this website for updates.

  • Is it possible to have my certificate sent by mail?

You can receive your degree certificate by mail only if you live abroad at the moment your certificate is ready to be picked up.

We do not send certificates to addresses in the Netherlands.

For more information, please go to the step-by-step guide to request your degree certificate.

Due to the current circumstances caused by the spreading of the coronavirus we have not been able to send you your certificate. We are currently exploring the possibility to resume the sending of degree certificates. We would like to advise you to keep an eye on this website for updates.

  • When will I receive my first-year’s certificate?

Every fall the university organises a ceremony for students who have finished their full first-year curriculum of their Bachelor's programme in one year.

The date of the ceremony will be published on the webpage with the ceremony dates. Students who are eligible for the ceremony will receive an invitation by email.

Be aware that dates might have been changed due to the current circumstances caused by the spreading of the coronavirus.

  • I am still waiting for the results of my courses abroad. Can I already apply for my degree certificate?

You can file a request for your degree certificate as soon as you have taken you last exams at your exchange university. In your request, you can indicate that you are still awaiting the results of your courses obtained abroad. Hand in your certified transcript as soon as possible at the Education Desk, so your results can be processed in SIS. Please take into account that your graduation date might be determined by the date on your transcript.  For this reason, always choose 'Graduating' as the reason for de-enrolling in Studielink. By doing this you are assured that you are enrolled for your study programme until all your results have been processed in SIS.

Be aware that you need to get permission from the Board of Examiners to include your courses obtained abroad in your study programme. Make sure to file a request at least six weeks before you apply for your degree certificate, so your request can be handled in time.

Check Minor or semester abroad for more information.

After requesting your degree certificate

  • How and when will I receive information about my graduation ceremony?

When you apply for your degree certificate you can indicate that you would like to attend the graduation ceremony.

No later than two weeks before the ceremony you will receive an official invitation with information on the exact time and location of the ceremony and number of guests you are allowed to bring.

We are currently exploring the possibility to organise graduation ceremonies after 1 September. If you have indicated that you would like to attend the graduation ceremony, you will be informed about this.

Be aware that dates might have been changed due to the current circumstances caused by the spreading of the coronavirus.

  • I have applied for my degree certificate. When can I collect it?

Please find the graduation dates and corresponding collection dates in the collection schedule.

Be aware that the Education Desk is closed, due to the current circumstances caused by the spreading of the coronavirus. Therefore, it is not possible for you to collect your certificate. We are currently looking into alternative options. We would like to advise you to keep an eye on this website for updates.

  • I am unable to collect the certificate myself. Can someone else collect it for me?

When you apply for your degree certificate, you indicate that you would like someone else to collect the certificate at the Education Desk.

For this you will need to fill in a liability waiver, which you will receive after choosing this option.

The person in question needs to bring this liability form, a copy of your valid identification (passport, driver’s license or ID-card) and his/her own valid identification to be able to collect the certificate.

If you did not selected this option, but still want someone else to collect your degree certificate please contact the Education Desk.
