The criminal mind is something that fascinates many people. You can see this in the number of movies, tv-shows, books and newspaper articles dedicated to criminal activities. Although there are few accurate and interesting representations of how the criminal mind works in media, many also portray either overly simplified, or exaggerated characters. In this lecture, I want to talk a bit about what factors predict criminal behavior, as well as mental illness in offenders. This will include subjects like substance abuse, personality disorders (such as psychopathy) and disorders in sex offenders.

We will also shortly discuss how mental illness might influence what happens in a court setting and after a sentence has been set. At the end of the lecture, you might think a bit differently about how media portrays criminal behavior, and the people that commit it.
