Flexible learning means paying per course. Do you want to study part-time in the next academic year due to administrative body membership, care obligations or other circumstances? If so, flexible learning might be just the thing for you.
With flexible learning, you only pay tuition fees for the courses that you plan to take. This amounts to €41.07 for each ECTS, with a minimum of 6 ECTS = €246.42. Flexible learning also allows you to take courses from several participating degree programmes at the same time.
At present, flexible learning is in the pilot stage. The UvA will ask participants in the flexible learning pilot to complete a number of evaluations. Along with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the UvA is eager to learn why you have joined the flexible learning pilot as well as what your experiences are. Participation in these evaluations is mandatory.
As a flexible learning student, you are subject to the same rules as a regular student, which are stated in the Teaching and Examination Regulations of the relevant degree programme.
Your entitlement to student grants and loans or a student public transport pass does not change as a result of flexible learning. Please visit DUO.nl for more information.
There are only limited places for flexible learning students in all of the participating degree programmes. Should the number of registrations exceed the number of places, admission will be decided by a lottery. Any places that become available after the lottery will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want to know more, please read 'How do I register for flexible learning?' below.
Flexible learning is available to UvA students who meet the following conditions:
If you want to go on exchange or want to take electives elsewhere, flexible learning is not an option.
Your tuition fees are calculated based on your total number of course credits (ECTS) plus a 15% surcharge. You pay €41.07 per credit, with a minimum of 6 ECTS = €246.42.
An initial tuition fee statement will be sent to you in early July, at which point you will need to pay the default minimum amount for 6 ECTS. During the academic year, your tuition fees will be recalculated on two occasions (in January and August) based on the number of credits for which you are registered.
You will receive no reimbursement of tuition fees. If you deregister from courses prior to the start of a semester or study period, you will not be charged for any such courses in excess of the 6 ECTS minimum. In addition, you will no longer be able to sit examinations for courses from which you have deregistered.
Flexible learning can be cheaper in one situation and more expensive in another. By making your own calculation, you can decide for yourself which of the two applies.
Sample situation 1: You are looking to earn 30 ECTS in the first semester.
Regular enrolment will cost you (2143/12) x 5 = €892.92. With flexible learning, your enrolment will cost 30 x 41.07 = €1,232.10.
Sample situation 2: You are looking to earn 24 ECTS across one academic year.
Regular enrolment will cost you €2,143. With flexible learning, your enrolment will cost 24 x 41.07 = €985.68 for the entire year.
You can register for flexible learning from May 2021. Before you can do so, you will need to have submitted a request for enrolment or re-enrolment via Studielink for the 2021-2022 academic year. There will not be another lottery.
The number of new participants for each degree programme is subject to a maximum. Should this number be exceeded on the first day of registration, admission to the pilot will be decided by a lottery. If the maximum is not reached on the first day, all participants will be admitted.
Students registering after the first day will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis up to the maximum availability. You can register from May 2021. Before you can do so, you will need to have submitted a request for enrolment or re-enrolment via Studielink for the 2021-2022 academic year. Any availability after 31 May will not be assigned to students interested at a later stage.
You will be notified within four working days whether you have been accepted for the pilot (subject to requirements). Before you can actually participate, you will need to have met all enrolment requirements.
Has the maximum number of places been reached or have you failed to meet the requirements? If so, your application for flexible learning will automatically be converted into a regular re-enrolment. This requires no action on your part. Should you wish to discontinue your studies, please withdraw your enrolment request in Studielink.
