The University of Amsterdam (UvA), Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and Inholland University of Applied Sciences will jointly participate with their own boat in the boat parade during Pride Amsterdam 2019. The participants were announced on 10 February. The LGBTQ community will use the event, which will take place on 3 August, to show that you may love whoever you want.
Together, the four institutions represent about 107,000 students and 15,000 staff members. This is the first time that Dutch institutions of higher learning have jointly taken such a strong stand. Whereas the UvA and VU have previously participated in the event, this will be the first time AUAS and Inholland take part.
The institutions will take part with a boat that can accommodate 80 students and staff. The idea to sail together on one boat is an initiative of AUAS and VU Pride, the LGBTQ networks of staff and students of AUAS and VU University. The executive boards fully support their respective institutions’ participation. This year will mark the 24th edition of Canal Pride.
The initiators are clear about their decision to participate in Pride Amsterdam 2019. ‘Higher education is an important part of Amsterdam. The institutions are the driving force behind the development, reform and numerous other essential professions and services in the city. We are using knowledge as a tool to counter ignorance, prejudice and intolerance. We do not only share knowledge, but also values such as the equality of the LGBTQ community within society. We want to show the city, former, current and future students and staff that everyone is welcome within higher education and that you may be whoever you want to be.’
