  • Why did the UvA choose Zoom when there is so much criticism in the media?

    Zoom was purchased because physical education had to be replaced in a short time. There was no suitable alternative on this scale and in this period of time. At the same time, the UvA is aware of the questions and concerns that exist about privacy and security at Zoom. For this reason, Zoom is designed to be as secure and privacy-friendly as possible and the UvA is currently conducting further research, after which additional measures may follow.

  • Can I use Zoom for all types of meetings?

    Until the UvA has conducted further research, it is advised not to use Zoom for sharing sensitive information. Examples are conducting employee performance reviews, conversations between student psychologists and students and for researchers who conduct interviews with vulnerable groups.

  • How can I use Zoom secure?

    If you log in via, your use of Zoom is covered by the UvA's Zoom license, about which we have made privacy and security agreements with Zoom. For example, by logging in with your UvAnetID, we have closed Zoom to third parties.

  • The UvA previously announced an in-depth privacy and security analysis of Zoom. What is the status?

    We have conducted an extensive privacy and security analysis, keep up with new developments and have regular consultations with Zoom. We will continue doing this. To date, several measures have been taken to increase Zoom's security, such as:

    • The conclusion of a UvA - Zoom processor agreement, in which the UvA privacy and security conditions are laid down;
    • An update to a new Zoom version (5.0), in which vulnerabilities are solved and the connection is better encrypted;
    • The possibility to exclude non-participants from your lecture or consultation, via the options "authenticated users only" and "lock meeting".
