Application and admission

Important information about your application

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, we have made changes and improvements to our application procedure for the September 2020 intake of our Master’s programmes.

Please know that this page is continuously monitored. We will post the latest updates here.

  • Applicants who need a study visa/residence permit (non-EU/EEA)

    Required tests

Because of the closure of many test centers around the world we will give you some extra time to submit the required test scores.

    GMAT and GRE test

All new applicants are exempt from the GMAT or GRE requirement. However, if you already have a complete GMAT or GRE result, you can still choose to upload it and we will assess it. If you do not have it, the Admissions Office will assess your Grade Point Average instead. Please upload your grade transcript in the application form and make sure your GPA is included in the transcript. Additionally, it would be useful for the admission officers to know your class rank/percentile, so please add this to your application if you have this information available.

    English test

We have extended the deadline to upload your English test score in your application. We advise you to take the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test (not available in mainland China and Iran).

    Adjusted deadlines:

The application deadline has passed: 1 April 2020
You need to complete your online application (including test scores) before: 18 May 2020

If you have registered in studielink and submitted your (incomplete) online application in Embark before 1 April you have until 18 May to complete your submitted application file by uploading missing documents such as the sufficient English test results.

Uploading official transcripts, diplomas or statements of graduation

You might face difficulties in getting an official document from your home university at the moment. Because of the situation, we now accept digital documents if directly send to us by (a contact from) your home university. We are currently working on a procedure for facilitating this process.

Handling fee for students with a diploma or degree obtained outside the Netherlands

The handling fee for students with a diploma or degree obtained outside the Netherlands to submit the application form at UvA - Economics and Business is €100. The fee will not be refunded if you are not accepted to the programme. The fee will be refunded if you have been accepted, but you choose not to start the programme in September 2020 due to the coronavirus situation.

    Online education

We will in any case offer education and exams online in the 1st semester to give you the certainty that you can start your studies at the UvA, no matter where you are. In each period, we will evaluate whether the circumstances, in line with the social distancing rules of a 1.5 metre society, allow for meetings of small groups for small-scale lectures at the Roeterseiland Campus. There will be no mandatory attendance for these lectures.

  • Applicants with an EU-nationality who don't reside in the Netherlands and require our student housing service

General questions about the application process

  • Has my application deadline been changed?

For some applicants the deadline has been changed. You find all September 2020 intake information on this page.

Please note that there is an extended deadline to upload documents to your submitted application. This means that you still have to submit your (incomplete) online application before the application deadline, but we will give you extra time to complete your already submitted application in the Embark system.

  • I have an English test scheduled, but it is not yet certain if it will take place. Can I submit my language test results later?

Because of the coronavirus situation the deadline to submit English proficiency scores has been extended:

    • For non-EU nationalities the deadline to add the English scores to the online application file is now 18 May 2020. Due to immigration procedures, no further extension will be possible. The deadline to submit the online application was 1 April 2020.
    • For EU nationalities who need housing assistance, the deadline to add the English scores to the online application file is now 18 May 2020.  If no housing assistance is required, the deadline to add the English scores to the online application file is now 1 July 2020. Please make sure to submit the online application before 1 May 2020.

Additionally, TOEFL iBT, one of the English proficiency exams, is now offering an online test in some countries. Please check if this is available in your country.

  • I can't get my documents translated or issued by my university. Can I still submit an application in Embark?

Because of the corona virus situation, we will proceed to evaluate your application without the certified translations. This means that, for now, we accept translations made by you. However, we still need an official certified translation before 1 August 2020 if you are accepted into one of our progammes for the September 2020 intake.
We will inform you later about how to send us the official translations. If the official translation shows that you are not eligible for the pogramme, the University of Amsterdam will reserve the right to reject your application.

The University of Amsterdam is closely monitoring developments around the coronavirus. Government measures to limit the impact of the corona virus outbreak are having a major impact on UvA staff and (prospective) students.
