Study programme

  • Students should always use the UvA Course Catalogue as their primary source of information about a  study programme (of the programme you are taking). In My Academic Plan in SIS you will be automatically linked to the study programme that belongs to the programme you are registered for. Your academic plan will automatically register which courses you have passed and which courses you still need to take. The Teaching and Examination Regulations always serve as the guiding principle with regard to the study components required for graduation.
  • Your study programme usually consists of mandatory courses and restricted and/or free electives, but can also include a Minor or semester abroad. If you have passed extra-curricular courses you are not allowed to include in your study programme, you can request to have these courses added to your diploma supplement.
  • It may be possible that your study programme is not completely correct and that you need to make adjustments.

Registering a specialisation

You have to choose your specialisation via www.uva.nl/courseregistration. Within five working days after registering your specialisation, the courses of the curriculum of that specialisation will be incorporated into your academic plan.

Types of courses in your study programme

Your study programme usually consists of mandatory courses and restricted and/or free electives:

Mandatory courses

You always have to pass mandatory courses unless you have passed a similar course somewhere else and if some conditions are met. If you want to know if you qualify for an exemption, please check Request for Exemption.

Restricted-choice electives

You have to obtain the indicated minimum amount of EC by following a number of courses from the list with restricted-choice electives. You can also request an exemption for these courses by submitting a Request for Exemption

Free-choice electives

You can take free-choice electives at UvA Economics and Business, at other UvA Faculties or at other universities in the Netherlands or abroad provided that the courses meet certain requirements.

Minor or semester abroad

You can include a minor or courses obtained during an exchange period abroad in your study programme if your study programme allows for 30 EC free electives or offers the possibility to follow a minor or a semester abroad. You have to request permission from the Board of Examiners to include the courses in your study programme. You can file this request when you are certain which courses you will follow. Look here for the conditions that the courses have to meet in any case.

Academic Plan and graduation

As soon as you apply for the degree certificate your academic plan in SIS will be checked based on graduation requirements which are linked to the year you started your programme.
