General rules for electives

You can find the rules and regulations for electives in the Teaching and Examination Regulations of UvA Economics and Business. Some of the regulations and rules are: 

  • The student has to meet the entry requirements set for the elective.
  • A request will only to granted if an elective has been obtained while the student was enrolled as a student at UvA Economics and Business.
  • The elective does not overlap with other courses from your study programme.
  • The Bachelor elective needs to be of at least second year level. An exception to the previous rule; a maximum of 12 ECTS of first year courses can be take up as free-choice electives.
  • The Master electives need to be at Master's level and should be relevant to the study programme.
  • In the UvA Course Catalogue you will find the rules and regulations for electives in the Bachelor's programme. Please check the specific track you are following in your study programme.

Electives obtained inside UvA Economics and Business

Do you wish to add one or more courses you have passed at UvA Economics and Business to your study programme as a free-choice elective?

If a course offered by UvA Economics and Business does not appear in the list of free-choice electives in your study plan, you can apply to add this course via a Replacement request. Follow the instructions in the Free-choice electives in SIS PDF document. The request will be checked and subsequently approved or rejected. There is no need to hand in any documents in addition to the request in SIS. The processing time of the request is six weeks.

Electives obtained at the UvA

Do you wish to add one or more courses you have passed elsewhere at the UvA to your study programme as a free-choice elective?

Follow the instructions in the Free-choice electives in SIS PDF document to submit a Replacement request. The request will be checked and subsequently approved or rejected. There is no need to hand in any documents in addition to the request in SIS. The processing time of the request is six weeks.

Electives outside UvA – other Dutch University

Do you wish to add one or more courses you have passed at another Dutch university to your study programme as a free-choice elective?

  • Follow the instructions in the digital application form approval courses to submit a request.
  • Please note: The Board of Examiners will only process this request  if you have uploaded all necessary documents as mentioned on the form for all the courses you wish to add to your study programme.
  • As soon as the application is complete you will receive a receipt by email and the Board of Examiners will make a decision within six weeks. 
  • If you have not yet submitted an official transcript you will receive a conditional decision. 
  • Immediately after you receive an official transcript you should hand it in at the Education Desk. The courses will be registered in SIS after the Education Desk has received an official transcript.

Digital form approval courses

Permission for taking optional courses at the VU Amsterdam

You have to fill out a form via the Digital Student Service Desk for a statement granting permission to take optional courses at the VU University Amsterdam as a guest student. In the form you can choose: Permission for taking courses at another Dutch university as a guest student​. The processing time of the application is 4 working days.

Electives outside UvA – university abroad

Do you wish to add one or more courses you have passed at a university abroad to your study programme as a free-choice elective?

  • Follow the instructions in the  digital application form approval courses to submit a request.
  • Please note: The Board of Examiners will only process this request  if you have uploaded all necessary documents as mentioned on the form for all the courses you wish to add to your study programme.
  • All documents should be in Dutch or English (or a translation should be added).
  • As soon as the application is complete you will receive a receipt by email and the Board of Examiners will make a decision within six weeks. 
  • If you have not yet submitted an official transcript you will receive a conditional decision. 
  • Immediately after you receive an official transcript you should hand it in at the Education Desk. The courses will be registered in SIS after the Education Desk has received an official transcript that corresponds to the conditionally approved courses.
  • The courses obtained abroad will receive the grade 'AVV' and they do not count towards graduation with honours
