What will you learn in this minor?

You will learn to carry out a Data Science project from beginning to end. That involves: asking the right (research) question(s), data collection and cleaning, data management and organisation, modelling, communication and visualisation, and implementation of your findings. This minor will give you excellent job prospects. McKinsey have projected a shortfall of 190,000 Data Scientists by 2018!

Transition to a Master

The minor will make you conditionally eligible for a UvA Master's programme:

• Business Administration: The ‘Digital Business’ track teaches you to apply Data Science in a commercial/business context. Find out more about the additional admission requirements that apply.

Programme

The minor consists of 30 EC and can be completed in one semester. It includes the following courses:

• Algorithms and Data Structures in Python (6 EC, period 1)*
• Data Wrangling (6 EC period 1)
• Databases & Data Visualisation  (6 EC, period 2)
• Machine Learning  (6 EC, period 2)
• Privacy Law and Ethics (3 EC, period 3)
• Text Retrieval and Mining (3 EC, period 3)

*Students from FNWI – Informatiekunde can replace this course with either "Zoekmachines" or "Problemsolving and Search".

Entry requirements

• You must have successfully completed your first year (60 EC) of a Bachelor’s programme at a research university (WO).
• Students taking this minor typically follow a Bachelor's programme in: Actuarial Sciences, Business, Communication Sciences, Econometrics, Economics, Psychology or STEM studies (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
• The minor is also open to other students, provided they have an affinity with quantitative methods.
• This minor is open to students of UvA Economics and Business, except voor students of the Bachelor's programma in Business Analytics.

Required prior knowledge

The minor Amsterdam Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is for many a difficult programme. You are required to have basic knowledge of Python and Statistics. Self-study before starting the minor will be required in case of deficiencies in:

• Python
• Econometrics and Statistics
