Changing your UvAnetID password

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) puts a great premium on online security. We take various measures to ensure our employees are able to work safely. Passwords are a weak link in our security. It is therefore essential that you regularly change your UvAnetID password.

How do I change my password?

Change your password on the device you work with the most. This can be your managed ICT workstation or a Self-Support or personal computer. Only after doing so, proceed with changing your password on your other (mobile or personal) devices. Choose the situation that applies to you below.

  • UvA-managed ICT workstation

Please note! It is important to carefully follow all the steps on your managed workstation. This will prevent your UvAnetID from being blocked because your devices will automatically keep trying to connect with the old password.

If your new password doesn’t work, try to log in again after half an hour. Does it still not work? Contact the Service Desk ICT Services.

    Preparation

    Step 1

With the exception of your managed ICT workstation, switch off all other (personal and/or mobile) devices that you use to access UvA services. This includes all the devices you use to check your UvA email or calendar, for example.

    Step 2

Close all applications and save your files, as you will need to restart your ICT workstation later in the process.

    Step 3

Make sure you are connected to VPN: type 'Pulse Secure' into the search field in the lower left-hand corner of the task bar. Then open Pulse Secure. You will see 'UvA VPN connected' with a green and white check mark behind it if your VPN is on. If not, click on 'Connect' and log in with your UvAnetID.

    Change Password

Step 1 (On your managed ICT workstation)

    • Go to id.uva.nl and choose the option 'change your password'.
    • Then follow the steps on the website.
    • You will receive a confirmation of the password change on your UvA mail from the Servicedesk ICT Services (servicedesk-icts@uva.nl). If you have a private email address in Self-Service Tool, you will also receive the confirmation on that address.

    Step 2

Check again if you are connected to VPN. See step 3 of the preparation if you are not sure.

    Step 3

    • Lock your ICT workstation via the Windows key+L
    • Next, unlock your ICT workstation with your new password.

    Step 4

    Restart your ICT workstation.

Step 5 (On your other devices)

After you have changed the password on your ICT workstation, you will also need to set the new password on all the other (mobile and/or personal) devices on which you use your UvA account. Do not switch on all your devices at the same time, but do this one by one after you have changed the passwords for each of them. This is important because your devices will automatically try to connect at the same time using the old password, which may cause your account to be blocked.

Change the passwords immediately for all applications (such as Office, Microsoft 365, including Teams, OneDrive, mail and calendar) or services (such as VPN, printing, UvA Wi-Fi) that you use on those devices. In the drop-down menus, you will find tips on how to do this for each application or service.

Note: if your new password doesn’t work, try to log in again after half an hour. Does it still not work? Contact the Service Desk ICT Services.

  • Self-Support or personal computer

It is important to follow all the steps carefully at your ICT workstation. This will prevent your UvAnetID from being blocked because your devices will keep trying to connect automatically with the old password.

Note: If your new password doesn’t work, try to log in again after half an hour. Does it still not work? Contact the Service Desk ICT Services.

    Preparation

With the exception of your ICT workstation, turn off all other personal and/or mobile devices that you use to access UvA services. Think about all the devices you use to check your UvA email or calendar, for example.

    Changing password

    Step 1

    • Go to id.uva.nl and choose 'change your password'.
    • Then follow the steps on the website.
    • You will receive a confirmation of the password change on your UvA mail from the Servicedesk ICT Services (servicedesk-icts@uva.nl). If you have a private email address in Self-Service Tool, you will also receive the confirmation on that address.

    Step 2

Determine whether you are working on an UvA account or on a local account. This determines the steps to take.

    1. Mac and Linux always work with a local account.
    2. Windows can work with either an UvA or a local account. You can determine your account type as follows.
      1. Click on the Windows menu via the icon at the bottom left of your screen and click on 'settings' (the little wheel).
      2. Choose 'account' (puppet icon) in the overview. If you see your UvA mail address there, you are on an UvA account. If you see 'local account' or your private email address, you are working on a local account.

    I have an UvA account

Your computer password will change automatically. Most basic services linked to your UvAnetID are automatically updated with your new password. However, some services may ask you for your new password. Please take this into account. You can continue to step 3.

    I have a local account

Your computer password does not change and you do not need to. However, you will need to provide all the services linked to your UvAnetID with your new password yourself: unfortunately, this does not happen automatically. We have listed the most important ones for you. How to do this is explained per topic in the drop-down menus. Once you have done this, go to step 3.

Step 3 (On your other devices)

In the pull-down menus, you will find tips on how to do this for each application or service.

Note: If your new password doesn’t work, try to log in again after half an hour. Does it still not work? Contact the Service Desk ICT Services.

  • My account has been blocked

You have probably entered the wrong password for your UvAnetID too many times. Please contact the Service Desk ICT Services.

\\(enter the abbreviation for your faculty or department, such as icts, ac, fgw, fmg, fnwi, etc., in place of xxx).
    6. Click on Finish.
    7. If you are asked for a user name and password, these are your UvAnetID@uva.nl and your new password.

  • 5. Change password of UvA wireless connection (Wi-Fi)

It may happen that eduroam does not accept the new password and keeps asking for the password. In that case you need to visit wifiportal.uva.nl again.

    Follow these instructions:

    • Step 1: Do you already have an internet connection? If not, connect to 'UvA Open Wi-Fi' or 'Amsterdam Science Park'. If you do, start with step 2. Please be aware that these are public networks and therefore not suitable for sending sensitive information.
    • Step 2: Go to  http://wifiportal.uva.nl.
    • Step 3: Please read the page carefully and follow the step-by-step instructions.
    • Step 4: Enter your UvA-net ID (when requested) followed by @uva.nl and click on 'Join Now'.
    • Step 5: The correct settings will be downloaded. You will be asked to enter the password of your UvA-net ID (up to three times).

Getting stuck? Then read on in the instructions below.

After you have activated the correct settings

Now you can start using secured wireless internet at the UvA by selecting the ‘uva’ or ‘eduroam’ wireless networks.

Please note: if you own an Android mobile phone (version 5.0 or later) it is possible that the Android System WebView application is blocking software downloads. If so, try a different Wi-Fi connection or make use of your own mobile network.

    Mac

To restore the eduroam connection on a Mac, it is necessary to replace the Wireless Profile.

    Step 1: Remove the Profile

    • If you are connected to eduroam: disconnect
    • Open 'System Preferences’
    • Open 'Profiles’
    • Select the UvA profile
    • Delete the UvA profile by clicking on the minus sign. Enter your Mac password to perform this action.

    Step 2: Install new profile

Step 3: The file SecureW2.mobileconfig is downloaded

    • Open SecureW2.mobileconfig
    • Click on 'Continue' in the Profiles window
    • Next you enter the password for your UvAnetID three times and then possibly once the password of your Apple computer itself. Whether or not you need to enter your computer's password depends on your security settings.
