Types of petitions

There are different types of petitions that you may submit in SIS. The following instructions apply exclusively to students in the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) and the Communication Science degree programme.

Exemption

You may apply for an exemption for a course component in an academic plan that has already been completed. For example: for a comparable subject that you took as part of a different programme.

Extracurricular subject

You may submit a petition for a course component that is not included in the standard academic plan. Extracurricular subjects do not count towards the requirements for your degree programme; however, they will be listed on your diploma supplement. For example: you take a course elsewhere based on your interests and you do not wish to have it count towards the number of credits required for a diploma.

Substitution

You may submit a petition to substitute a course component in the academic plan with a different UvA course component. For example: you may use this to fulfill your elective (not every degree programme allows for this option).

External study programme

You may submit a petition for requesting a course component that you earned in a study programme not associated with the UvA and wish to have credited toward the total number of credits in your UvA academic plan. Select this type of petition within your elective options. For example: you plan to take several courses at a foreign university and want approval (this can be done in advance or afterwards).
