A diversity committee was established at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences in 2020, consisting of academics, support staff and students. The aim of the committee is a more diverse and inclusive faculty, for both students and staff.
Marieke Brand has been the faculty diversity officer since September 2019. She works in close collaboration with other faculty diversity officers and with the chief diversity office team of the UvA. The faculty diversity officer has taken the initiative to set up the diversity working group (as mentioned above) in the faculty.
This working group consists volunteers who are willing to help to give shape to the diversity policies that are developed in the faculty. In this way, all departments are represented. Their advice has resulted in a diversity action plan in 2020, which has informed the policy steps that the dean has decided to take subsequently.
Following up on the publication of the UvA diversity document the faculty has taken several measures, e.g. in the field of gender balance in the faculty workforce, social safety and outreach activities.
Summer programme for first-generation students
In the summer of 2020, the Faculty of Social and Behavioural sciences participated in the 'Get Ready' programme (Dutch only) for the first time. The ‘Get Ready’ programme is a three-day summer programme intended to help first-generation students (students who are the first in their family to go to university) to feel at home at the UvA more quickly and be well prepared to start their studies.
Entry and progression of young people with a migration background
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is one of the faculties participating in the UvA 'Meet your mentor' programme since 2020. The aim of this programme is to support young people with a migration background when they move on to the labour market.

Diversity committees active in the departments
Diversity committees active in the departments in our faculty, in all department initiatives are being set up. This is in part thanks to the active involvement of staff members who do this work on a voluntary basis. These diversity committees work on different topics, that are related to the specific context of those departments. They all are connected to the FMG diversity working group, where knowledge on initiatives and how to make steps are also shared and discussed.
Grass roots organisations for students and staff
We are proud that two organisations have sprung up in the faculty that dedicate themselves to diversity, equity and inclusion and that give a platform for our students and staff to relate to each other.
