Choosing a student association

The platform Lid worden in Amsterdam (which translates as 'Become a Member in Amsterdam') is a platform to help you choose the perfect student association. On the website you can find information about 25 Amsterdam-based student associations, from traditional to cultural to sports-based, with or without initiation rituals. There's also a quiz to help you figure out which student association suits you best.

Study association versus student association: what's the difference?

A study association is affiliated with a specific degree programme. Joining your programme's study association can help you complete your studies successfully. You'll meet fellow students from different years of study, and you might become more actively involved in your studies. While study associations primarily focus on academics, they can also be very sociable and lively.

In a student association, the focus is on social activities. A student association is the perfect way to meet students from different study programmes, and even from different educational institutions. There are associations focused on socialising, but also associations with a focus or an activity, such as sports or music, or on culture or religion. Besides making new acquaintances (networking!), you can also gain valuable experience by joining an association committee or board.

Code of conduct

The UvA, the AUAS and the VU, in collaboration with the Amsterdam Chamber of AssociationsExternal link (AKvV) and the affiliated student associations, have written a code of conduct. This code of conduct sets out agreements regarding proceedings during the introductory period for student associations. It sets out standards and values that everyone must adhere to.
